Dumpster Diving

While I normally gravitate toward buying stuff new, I've had pretty good success finding perfectly acceptable secondhand gear.  These are usually opportunistic purchases where I may not have made the expenditure for an item, but buying used represents a great deal.  My primary source for used stuff is my local Craigslist site, but I've also picked up a few items at nautical flea markets and such.  My successes to date include:

  • Raymarine hydraulic autopilot (purchased as a spare)
  • 14' Porta-Bote
  • 8HP Yamaha 2-stroke outboard
  • 44# Delta anchor
  • 60# Danforth anchor
  • 21" Polyform ball fenders
  • Explorer charts and assorted cruising guides for the Bahamas
  • Anchor kellet
  • North Sails storm sail
  • Todd 1000 helm seat
  • Garmin 276C handheld GPS
  • Fortress FX-55 anchor
  • Throttle and shift cables
  • Trace 2500W Inverter (spare)
  • AB 12VS Rigid Inflatable
  • 25HP Mercury 2-stroke outboard
  • Airline 4-person diving hookah
  • Raymarine ST 60 Wind Repeater
  • Ocean Kayak Malibu Two
  • Fortress FX-55 anchor #2
  • Avon 3.10 Air Floor inflatable
  • ICOM M710 SSB radio & AT-130 tuner

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
